"AN UNKNOWN HERO OF THE SOUTH" according to robert l carter. Robert Rodes finally gets the biography he has deserved for years. Historians have stayed away from a book on Rodes because of a perceived lack of information, but Swisher's passion for fellow Lynchburg, Virginia resident Rodes gave him the patience to unearth much undiscovered material on his subject. Like all Civil War Generals, Rodes had his good days (. Terrific Biography C.Rodes Boyd,Jr. This was a well written biography on a forgotten soldier who is just getting his due. Highly recommend this fine historical study of Confederate division commander in action!

Born to a middle-class Virginia family, Rodes, a VMI alumnus, had a respectable career as an engineer when the war broke out. His war service began as a colonel at the first Bull Run and ended in 1864, when he was killed at the head of his division in the third battle of Winchester. His distaste for politicking and displays of temperament wasn't the least of his virtues, and all in all he seems to have done good service, even if he was fortunate, perhaps, not to have been promoted to corps command. From Booklist Swisher has written a worthwhile study of one of the more distinguished division commanders of the Army of Northern Virginia, despite the facts that Robert Rodes' widow destroyed all his papers, and few of his colleagues left any memoirs of him. In between, he experienced low points, such as mishandling his division at Gettysburg, and high points, such as his role in defending the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania. All rig
