While Stephen Adly Guirgis has become over the past few years a playwright who has established himeself as one of America's most interesting and bright, Den of Thieves marks a shakey beginning.The characters, all funny, quirky and contradictory in standard literate comedy terms hold up better than the story, which seems desperate and caught up in it's own funkiness.If for another reason than an early work by Guirgis, Den Of Thieves offers funny dialogue and bombastic characters.. "a master's first attempt at playwrighting" according to Frank L. Greenagel Jr.. This was first staged in 1996, so it is, from what I can tell, Mr. Guirguis's first published play. It is quite short. Four "very low-level criminals at best and a bunch of pathetic losers at worst" get caught stealing from a club. What they didn't know was that the club was owned by the Big Tuna (a well known NYC mob boss) and his son, the Little Tuna, and nephew, Sal, are trying to figure out how to punish them. Sal wants to kill them, while the Little Tuna wants to make them a deal.The four thieves are Maggie, Paul, Boochie and Flaco. Maggi
